When you think of Arizona, the first first things that come to mind are probably the Grand Canyon, Phoenix, and hot, dry weather. While all those exist in Arizona, I’m going to insist that you skip Phoenix and just head over to Tucson. And while you’re visiting, these are my top 10 Tucson bucket list items that you should definitely check out!

But before I tell you why you need to visit Tucson, let’s get two super important facts out of the way, mmmkay?
- Fact number one: It’s pronounced “too-sawn“, not “tuck-sun“.
- Fact number two: Tucson is Phoenix’s much cooler, weirder, more badass little sister. Yeah, I said it. I’m not hating on Phoenix (okay, maybe a little), but I graduated from The University of Arizona, which is just way better than Arizona State University in every way possible.
Alright… I’ve overdone the bratty rivalry. MOVING ON.
Tucson is located in the southeast region of Arizona, about a two-hour drive south on I-10 from Phoenix and less than an hour and a half north from the Arizona-Mexico border in Nogales. It’s an amazing location to spend a sunny weekend getaway during the cold winter months most of the other states deal with, and it’s the perfect place to kick back and relax or get outside for hiking and outdoor adventures.
Tucson boasts incredible rock climbing on Mt. Lemmon, stunningly gorgeous desert hikes, and beautiful mountains that surround city. It also has some of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at, and I’m not just saying that as a biased born-and-raised Tucson girl.
1. Saguaro National Park
This is a Tucson bucket list must, which is why it’s at the top of my list. There’s a west and an east Saguaro National Park, and I’m going to just come clean and tell you that the East Saguaro National Park is the one you need to see (don’t hate me, West Side lovers).
You can drive, run, or bike around Cactus Loop Drive, which is a scenic 8 miles, or you can hike one of the dozens of trails. As a trail runner, I’m inclined to tell you that the trails are where it’s at. Especially if you want to hike up Tanque Verde Ridge Trail to get beautiful views from the top of the Rincon Mountains.

2. Sabino Canyon
Hiking and trail running lovers, this place is going to be a must. It’s not every day you see running water in Tucson desert, but if you hike far enough, you’re bound to see at least a little water.
You have two options when you’re at Sabino Canyon: the Tram Road or the trails. The Tram road is about 7.5 miles roundtrip with elevation gain of a little over 700ft. It’s great for walking or running, but if you prefer to kick back and relax, there’s also a tram you can ride.
The trails are, in my opinion, the real reason to visit Sabino Canyon. There are a ton of incredible trails that take you to amazing viewpoints and hidden desert gems. Seven Falls is my #1 recommended hike in this area. Get an early start because it can get busy. And be mindful of the forecast – flash floods can be dangerous in this area.
3. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
If you’re interested in learning more about the desert, The Desert Museum is Tucson must see. The grounds are just stunningly beautiful, and there’s a wealth of information about the desert that you are not going to find easily anywhere else in town.
4. Mt. Lemmon
Mt. Lemmon is home to incredible rock climbing, hiking, camping, views for days, and the perfect reprieve from hot summer days. A cute town called Summer Haven sits at the top of the mountain, and it’s a great place to rent a cabin for a weekend stay. It’s an absolute Tucson must-see! While you’re there, be sure to head over to The Mt. Lemmon Cookie Cabin and thank me later!

5. Trail Dust Town
This is a great place to enjoy some old southwest Wyatt-Earp-like-vibes. There are fun shops, a small train ride that kids (and adults) love, and great dining. Be sure to eat dinner at Pinnacle Peak while you’re there… just don’t wear a tie unless you want them to cut it off and hang it on the ceiling.
6. The Gaslight Theater
If you’re looking for a fun night out, The Gaslight Theater is a fun place watch an enjoyable musical comedy melodrama. Little Anthony’s Diner is next door if you need a fun bite to eat before the show. Pro Tip: they have the best milkshakes!
7. Reid Park Zoo
If you’re an animal lover or just want to spend some time at a really beautiful park, Reid Park Zoo is a great place to visit. They also do a really beautiful job decorating for the holidays, which can be a great thing to see with the family.
8. Watch the Sunset
This one is simple. If you’re going to visit Tucson, you absolutely must watch the sunset. Tucson has – beyond a doubt – the most beautiful sunsets I’ve ever seen. Even the simple ones are magic. I really recommend going to Saguaro National Park East for some unobstructed, spectacular views of the sunset.

9. 4th Avenue
I’m not a huge nightlife scene kind of person, but I make an exception for 4th Avenue. There are tons of fun shops and great bars along here. My favorite bar is Surly Wench Pub. It has quite the awesome thumping EDM, dance floor, and goth scene. It’s a blast!
I also really like R Bar. It has a cool vibe and plenty of dancing.
10. Agua Caliente Park
On the far northeast side of town, there’s a beautiful park that was magic to me as a kid because there was actually water flowing up out of the ground creating a stream that fed into ponds. This was a big deal because Tucson isn’t exactly home to a lot of water.
There are trails perfect for an evening walk, and a pretty fascinating history you can learn about while you’re there. It’s a definite Tucson bucket list item!
Tucson has so many gems that I’m just going to have to do a Part 2 sometime… but in the meantime, check all of these out and let me know which was your favorite!
